Tsukimi: Moon-Viewing Kaiseki in Tokyo | Ise Sueyoshi

By Chef Yuuki Tanaka, owner of Ise Sueyoshi — Tripadvisor Best of the Best: Japan #1, World #12.(source).

Moon-Viewing and New Rice

On an autumn night, we raise a cup to the quiet moonlight and offer gentle thanks for the harvest—that is Japan’s tsukimi. For a nation shaped by rice, the new-rice harvest ties a ribbon on a year’s work and marks a moment to bow to the heavens’ blessings. Around this time, clouds grow thin and the air turns clear, so the moonlight shines all the more. As an offering, we stack small, round dumplings into a little pyramid—tsukimi dango—white pearls set high to give thanks to the moon for the bounty.

This month’s menu follows the theme “A Story of Moon and Harvest.” Please enjoy our kaiseki as if listening closely to the turning of the seasons.

Autumn Harvest Kaiseki

An experience found only in this moment and place—that is the essence of kaiseki.
Kaiseki is Japan’s traditional course cuisine, yet it is more than a sequence of dishes: a seasonal story that honors timing, vessels, setting, and even the quiet pauses between. Meaning lives in every element—food, plate, and flower—guiding a small pilgrimage for all five senses.

This season at Ise Sueyoshi, we center early-autumn gifts from Chef Yuuki’s hometown, layering their aromas over the steam of freshly cooked new rice. We listen closely to each ingredient and add only what is needed.

It is an evening that reaches beyond sightseeing to touch Japan’s quiet sense of beauty—a gentle, refined entertainment for adults. We warmly invite you to experience it.

One of the best meals I’ve ever eaten

Wow! We had an amazing experience at Ise Sueyoshi last week. Absolutely everything we ate was delicious and we loved that Yuuki was able to tell us where all of the food came from and knew the producers. The seasonality of the food is wonderful too, the new season rice we had was wonderful. The book accompanying the meal is lovely, the ambience is really special, with only one other couple dining with us, and the chefs are really friendly. Cannot recommend highly enough, just wish we could go again very soon!

We are proud to continue delivering an exceptional dining experience that earned us the Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best 2024 award, ranking among the Best Restaurants in Tokyo.
